Your school tax bill and the homebuyer fund
El Paso ISD adopted a rate of $1.0745 per $100 of valuation. On a home of average taxable value in the district, the school portion runs about $1,294 this year, up from $1,180, roughly $114 more. If you are under 65, your home is valued above $200,000, and your valuation rose, plan on an increase. More than 20,000 owner occupied homes there owe nothing at all, because their exemptions exceed their taxable value. Confirm your homestead exemption is on file, and know that at 65 you get another $60,000 off and your school bill cannot be raised after that.
Separately, the city wants to move $2.5 million of HOME money out of first time homebuyer assistance, the kind that covers down payment and closing costs, and into developing affordable rentals. Overall funding stays the same, but buyers would lose that door. If you were counting on it, written comments go to DCHDFacilities@elpasotexas.gov until 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, or call 915-212-0138. Either way, let's rework your cash to close this month so your plans do not hinge on it.
